Industry Volunteer Activities

Cain and Barnes LP have had long standing commitments to support professional groups with voluntary activities and sponsorship funding.  Examples of the work and organisations to which Cain and Barnes are affiliated are:

APSG (American Petroleum Surveyors Group) – Both Jim Cain (2003-04) and Michael Barnes (2008-09) are past chairmen of the APSG and have been actively involved in the organisation since it was originally formed in 1996.  Both Jim and Michael received the Leadership Service Award by APSG for their dedication to the Group over the last decade.

OGP (Oil and Gas Producers)  - This replaced the European Petroleum Surveyors Group and has now become the custodian of the EPSG Geodetic Database.  Jim Cain has been actively involved and volunteered a tremendous about of time to the Survey and Positioning Committee who have maintained the EPSG Geodetic Database.  Jim’s dedication was recognised at the June 2008 EAGE meeting in Rome where Roel Nicolai, Roger Lott and he were each presented with an award to mark their 12 years of commitment to the project.  Jim remains actively involved with the organisation.

THSOA – (The Hydrographic Society of America) – The Houston chapter of the thsoa has been going strong for many years and Jim Cain is a former trustee of the society.  He still attends many of the monthly meetings and the social events held by the society.  Michael Barnes was also chairman of the thsoa – Houston chapter in 1997-98.

MTS – (Marine Technology Society) – The MTS is the leading international community of ocean engineers, technologists, policy-makers, and educators.  Jim Cain has been actively involved with this organisation for many years and has previously acted as the MTS Technical Program Chair for the MTS Dynamic Positioning annual conference.

RICS – (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) – The RICS USA branch was established in 2000 and Michael became the founding Vice-Chair of this new branch of a very prestigious organisation.  The remit of the USA branch was to get practicing surveyors to become affiliated with the US branch of the organisation.  During his involvement the membership grew to over 3,000 members.
